Do You Have Two Or More Computers in Your House? Create a Network in Your Home and Share Resources
So the journey begins and our first stop is to establish the basics of a network. This Basic Networking guide will help you understand the following:
o The Hardware used to create a network
o The correct operating system to use on our network
o Understanding how networks work
So buckle up your seatbelt, here we go! Are home networks Complicated to set up? The short answer to the heading above is No. The long answer... Heck no!
Believe it or not, setting up a network in your home is not complicated by any means. All you need is a point in the right direction and a little guidance. Together with this Basic Networking guide we will create the best network for you and your family.
So, what's a network?
Simply put, a network is when two or more computers are connected and sharing data. That's it! Nothing more, nothing less. These computers can be connected in a variety of ways and we will touch on that a little later. What we want to do now is work out the type of network we need in our house.
Why do I need a network again?
There are a lot of benefits to having a network. If you have more than one computer in your house you really have no reason not to have them networked, and by networking them you will be able to:
o Share printers, CD-ROM drives and other removable drives between the computers.
o Eliminate having to transfer files from one computer to another using a floppy (do they still exist?) or CD-ROM and share files directly between PCs. ( a great advantage if you are lazy like me)
o A huge benefits is you can share your internet connection with the other computers in your home
o Store only a single copy of large files, saving space on the other PCs' hard drives.
Fantastic, how do I get started? Whoa there! Before we can start anything we need to plan first. "Plan?" I hear you say. Yes, plan! Building a network is a kin to building a house; we need a strong foundation to build upon. I can hear the groans already! You will be thanking me later.
There are two types of schemes you can use in a Network; Client/server network and peer to peer.
In the client/server network, you have one computer that acts as the server (the manager of the network or files), which controls the way other computers (known as clients) access the network, whether that being file sharing or running a program. Servers play a very important role on this particular type of network
Most home networks are based on the peer to peer Network, which has more relaxed controls thus is a better network for you and your family.
Operating Systems
This basic Networking guide assumes your operating system (OS) is at the very least windows 98 Second Edition. Although Windows XP would be preferable it's not a requirement. The reason for this is because networking was built to function from the ground up in windows 98 SE to windows XP. The following OS will work perfectly with networking:
o Windows XP
o Windows 2000
o Windows NT
o Windows ME
o Windows 98 SE (Second Edition)
Also all these OS versions have a pretty little nifty tool on them known as Internet Connection Sharing. This allows all computers to share the internet, so while you are reading an e-mail on your laptop, your kid can be checking out their facebook page on the PC.
Each computer must have a Network interface card otherwise known in short form as a NIC. Traditionally a NIC is a little electronic card that goes inside your computer right on its mother board, I use the term traditionally as not all NICs are cards anymore, and we now have network adapters that are connected via USB (Universal Serial Bus).
How to Connect - Cables, wires or thin air?
Now we must decide the type of connections we will use to connect our computers. This is very important as the type of connection we use will affect the speed that data travels across the network. Why is speed important? Well waiting a long time for a file to open in a software application or for a file to be copied from one machine to another can be very frustrating to put it mildly. We have four different ways to connect our PC's, each have their own advantages. Let's look at them shall we?
Ethernet Cables
o The connection type of choice for many businesses. Fast and reliable
o Can carry data up to1000 mbps across a network depending on the rated speed of the NIC cards
o Used by most businesses to connect their computers
o Though similar looking to telephone wire, it is designed to carry data unlike telephone wire which was designed to carry voice
o You will need a concentrator (we will get to this later,) to use Ethernet cable.
o The connector at the end of the cable looks like the connector at the end of your telephone cable, but it's actually slightly fatter.
Telephone Line
o Connect each computer's NIC (has to be a Telephone-cable NIC. Have you visited the NIC page yet?) to the telephone wall jack using a regular phone cable.
o Telephone cable is inexpensive and is available every where, including your super market
o Networking process uses part of the line voice communication doesn't, so you can still make calls whilst on the network
o Can transmits data up to 10mbps
o Is increasing with popularity.
o You will need a splitter for telephone wall jacks, to use your phone in the same jack
o If you have multiple lines in your house, all computers must be connected on the same line (same number)
Wireless connections
o No wires to trip over
o A very popular choice
o Best used on Windows XP, so would be best option to have all PC running XP
o Requires network adaptor that can receive and send wirelessly.
o Frequency can travel roughly 150 feet, passing through ceilings, walls and floors.

Is Your House Stuck in the 80's?
Whether you're thinking of selling your home, or just looking to make some updates, if you're home is still stuck in the 80's, it's time to make some changes. We're not talking about major design alterations; maybe a new coat of paint, some updated lighting fixtures and new flooring here and there.
If you're not sure of the age of your home, but the design touches look a little dated, take a walk down memory lane with some of these typical 80's style decorating characteristics.
You'll know your home is stuck in the 80's when:
- Your finished rec room looks like a nite club, with floor to ceiling mirrors, neon lights, wall-to-wall carpeting and a bean bag chair.
- Your rooms are painted in any of the following colors: hunter green, teal, peach, salmon or a mix of blues, grays and mauves.
- All the fixtures are made from brass and etched glass, including the gaudy dining room chandelier with sparkling beveled glass.
- Your track lighting looks like pop cans with big eyeballs popping out of them.
- Your vinyl floors are sporting a floral or marble print. Today's flooring styles include ceramic tiles, slate, cork or hardwood.
- Your walls are covered with yellowed, peeling wallpaper. Do yourself a favor and replace with paint or a natural fiber such as bamboo.
- Your bathroom has a brightly colored toilet, sink and tub. If you can't afford to replace them all, have the tub repainted and get a new toilet and modern sink.
- The taps in your bathroom are made from solid brass and your plumbing lines are constructed from copper pipe.
- The laminate counter in your kitchen has patterns and colors you've never seen combined before.
- You have older solid-wood cabinets with dark or fading stain. If you can't afford to replace them, give them a fresh coat of paint and add nickel coated knobs and pulls.
- Your flowered drapes are full of frills and ruffled valances.
- Your family room and kitchen are separated by a wood railing.
- You have a wood fireplace with a brick hearth.

Nontraditional Customs For Your Wedding
When one thinks of an typical wedding, one traditionally thinks of the wedding ceremony held in a church where the bride wears a white dress and the groom wears a dark tuxedo. There are usually a set of standard ceremony or vowels that are repeated by the bride and groom. More and more, however, bride and grooms are choosing to add ethnic or nontraditional elements to their more 'traditional' wedding ceremony.
For example, while it is a tradition in more than one culture, many African-American couples are choosing to include the wedding ceremony of "jumping the broom" to pay honor to their slave roots when the only ceremony a man or woman was allowed for marriage was to jump over a broom to indicate they were setting up housekeeping together. Today, a specially decorated broom is placed in front of the couple as they turn to leave the chapel after just after reciting their wedding vows. They then jump over the broom together to symbolically indicate that bad luck has been swept away as they start their new union and set up housekeeping together.
Depending on the pastor, it may be possible to alter traditional vows. The couple has the option of writing their own, which can be more intimate and a more personalized to the bride and groom. For example, a bride could mention how much she loved her husband-to-be despite the fact that he snores, and the groom could mention that he loved his wife-to-be even though she had cold feet that she insisted on warming up underneath his shirt on cold nights. These vows could even include key lyrics from songs that are meaningful to the couple, poetry, or other sayings that may be relevant in the context of their relationship.
There are other traditions, while less well-known, which are also being incorporated into the modern wedding ceremony. For example, in Scotland, up until the 1940's, it was possible for a man and woman to be married by declaring in front of three witnesses that they were husband and wife. In some modern ceremonies newly married couples of Scottish ancestry stand up following the other vows in front of the congregation and declare three separate times that they are now married. Another ceremony, which dates the medieval period, is the placing of the 'handfasting' cloth, a part of which is decorated by both the bride and groom and then used to tie their hands together as a symbol that the two are now joined as one.
These, like other wedding traditions, may be incorporated into your wedding ceremony with a little thought and planning. If unsure, you can consult with your clergyman to ensure their inclusion. Never be afraid to ask well in advance of the wedding ceremony so you can have the perfect wedding that is personalized just for you and your groom.

Time and Tide Waits For No One
The adage of "Time and Tide waits for No Man" is still very applicable in today's world. It is even more so with the advance of technology that keeps everyone on their toes. It is no longer acceptable to ponder before replying your email. Everyone seems to expect the reply the moment it is read by the recipient.
Imagine you get up early, drag yourself to the office, look at the email, talk on the telephone, shuffle papers from one pile to another, and you don't accomplish much. There are constant interruptions by people who walk into your office without appointment. You get to attend the unimportant meetings that are long and unproductive. You are always constantly being bombarded with faxes, emails, and letters. When you finally thought that you can settle down to do some serious work, you get call to put out someone else's fire. Important things are being pushed aside to those that are urgent. At the end of the day, having sped through one crisis to another, you are really to go home but totally exhausted.
Does these sounds familiar? Maybe not every day but it does happen on some days. Time management is a key skill for success at both work and home. Being able to master and apply it will help to improve your efficiency and well-being. Failing to do you could end up over-stretched and over-stressed.
From identifying priorities to organizing systems, from handling interruptions to managing others, these tips will help you master the powerful and empowering skill in time management
Planning is the key element in time and workload management. Apply the 80/20 rule to prioritize your tasks. Planning helps you to anticipate potential issues and stay on course. Be more sensitive to time and focus on important activities. It allows you to gather the needed information and identify resources and support. Good organizational skills are based on two things: effectiveness and efficiency. It is simply doing the right thing in the right way. More sophisticated way of setting priority would be to review the impact of the problem, the urgency of the problem and the severity of the problem if it is kept that way. Alternatively you can make use of the ABC system where A means important and urgent, B means urgent but not important and C means important things that are not urgent and can wait.
Procrastination is the greatest killer of productivity. Avoid the deadly deadlines as much as possible. Once you have the time use it. Are you the type who would wait until the last minute to start something? Or do you put off making a decision about something? And, wait looking behind you there may be a big pile of things waiting for you to do. There is no magic formula to deal with procrastination; however you could develop some positive habits and attitudes that will help you to manage and control it.
Americans waste nine million hours per day looking for misplaced items, according to the American Demographics Society. The Wall Street Journal reported that the average U.S. executive wastes six weeks per year (an hour a day) searching for missing information in messy desks and files.
Desktop management should be on your priority list in time management. Imagine a cluttered and untidy desk and the amount of time you need to find the items lying there. Never use your desk top as a coffee table, a filing point, a storage area and as a seat. Have a stack-tray which allows you to put your documents as IN, OUT and KIV.
When designing your new arrangement, keep in mind these few pointers:
•You can comfortably allow for three to five activity centers in one room.
•Place storage within an arm's reach of the activity.
•Keep space around windows, doors, and air vents clear.
•Office and desk areas are laid out to best advantage in L or U shape patterns.
•Lighting and outlet locations are relatively easy problems to overcome.
Housekeeping begins with categorizing the items into FILE, ARCHIVE & THROW - FAT approach. Now get on with it.
The office people could probably be the biggest time wasters for you. How could you control or influence them?
•Don't use interruptions as an excuse to avoid work
•Don't prolong a conversation
•Learn to say "No"
•Use negative body language to fend off intrusions
•Focus on your priorities - don't lose sight over them
To get off to a good start for the day, maximize your golden hour. You could do the following:
•Scan email subject lines, but delay responding to all but the most urgent until after 1030 am
•Use email rules to color code incoming messages to help you distinguish the truly urgent from the normal ones
•Schedule your most important meetings for 0830 am sharp in a meeting room with plenty of neutral light or
•Reserve the first 90 minutes of the day to work on your most important task: deflect other interruptions until later
•Use this time to schedule meetings with customers
•Use this time to schedule staff training sessions
•Change your voice-mail greeting to inform callers that you will get back to them promptly (later) this morning, and then let calls go to voice-mail
Everyone has the same amount time each day and success goes to those who can control and make effective use of their time. So, let's start controlling time.

House Cats - Eight Tips For Keeping Indoor Cats Happy
The number of house cats is increasing. More and more cat owners are deciding that it's no longer safe for their cat to go outside unsupervised; cars, other animals, poisons and malicious people are just some of the reasons.
Indoor cats can lead very happy lives, but they do need to be entertained more than outdoor cats. If house cats aren't stimulated enough, they'll get bored and may become stressed or exhibit cat behavior problems such as scratching the furniture and ignoring their litter box.
Here are 8 tips for keeping your house cat happy and entertained:
1. Make sure he has plenty of cat toys. He should have toys in every room. To add interest, split his toys into two or three batches and rotate them every few days.
2. Get him some good cat furniture. A scratching post is a must. Two or three in different areas of the house is even better. If you can afford it, cat trees and cat condos are great for entertaining house cats. If you're on a tight budget, you can make a cat condo using boxes, carpet, logs etc.
3. Use catnip. If your cat likes catnip, sprinkle it around his scratching post, bed and other favorite areas.
4. Provide seats for your cat near windows. Cats love to watch what's going on outside, and to sit in the sun. Window views at garden or street level are likely to provide more entertainment than those at higher levels in the house.
5. Grow some cat grass in a pot. This is a good substitute for eating grass outside.
6. Get a DVD specifically made for cats. Yes they do exist! Some cats love them and some aren't interested, but they're relatively cheap so it's worth a try.
7. Use a computer screensaver with swimming tropical fish. Some cats love this - it's like ultimate cat TV.
8. Teach your cat to walk on a leash. This does take some time and patience, but if you can do it you can then take your house cats outdoors in total safety.

Design Your Own Dream House
In the past, designing your own dream house meant grabbing a pen and pad of paper and spending hours meticulously drawing plans only to scrap them once you made a mistake. It was frustrating work. But, times have changed. Today, there are several house design software programs that can do the same work. Even better, it takes less time and allows for easy adjustments for mistakes along the way. Once a frustrating task, planning your dream house can be exciting again.
Using Software To Visualize Your Dream House
One of the most common problems people have when planning their dream home is trying to visualize how everything looks. House design software resolves this issue. It can provide a 3D interface through which you to view floor plans, walking areas, structural placements and more. But, some software programs are better than others.
Use a house design program that comes with preset floor plans and templates to get you started. Often, even if you have an idea of how your dream house should ultimately look, preset floor plans can get the creative juices flowing. The software you use should also be robust enough to allow you to modify the templates in any way you wish as you're designing the home.
Also, the software should allow you to plan the plumbing within your home as well as the electrical system. Some programs will even let you plan custom trims for your windows throughout your home. The more robust your software, the more flexibility you'll enjoy in designing your dream home to your preferences.
Designing Your Dream Home
If you're planning to design your dream house, using house design software can save time and make the process fun. Software shouldn't replace the skills and advice of a trained architect, but will allow you to create your home without the limitations of pen and paper. If you make a measurement error, adjusting your plans is easy and fast. When you're using software to design your home, the scope of your plans are limited only be your creativity (and physics).

Assisted Living Vs Nursing Homes
Assisted Living and Nursing Homes are two terms often used interchangeably, however this is a mistake. The two are actually very different, and a candidate for one is not a candidate for the other. The following are some differences between the two:
Assisted Living Facilities:
• Individuals in assisted living are more independent and can usually get through most of the day by themselves. They only need general help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, grooming and preparing food.
• Candidates still enjoy social activities with other people and make autonomous decisions about their day. Someone who belongs in an assisted living facility would be downright miserable in a nursing home.
• These living facilities require limited to no medical care. An ideal assisted living facility candidate would be in good health both mentally and physically.
• These facilities focus on personal privacy and self-sufficiency more so than a nursing home. Residents are able to maintain their independence in a more secure atmosphere.
• These facilities offer their clients a comfortable apartment that is luxurious and comfortable. Meals and light housekeeping are available.
• Assisted living facilities offer mature adults an alternative with care when needed and would prefer not to manage their large house anymore.
Nursing Homes:
• Those in nursing homes need a great deal more care. They usually require 24-hour nursing supervision and are generally not in good health. Nursing homes are equipped to handle patients who are not mentally or physically well.
• Nursing home patients require help with much more than three or more daily tasks - such as walking or being pushed in wheel chairs, eating, and regular medical tests.
• A nursing home is a place for someone who is unable to be cared for at home, but is not a candidate for hospital care. Although, some nursing homes are set up like hospitals to meet state requirements.
• Nursing homes also provide rehabilitation to help people gain back their independence after a serious health problem, i.e. a stroke or fall.
• Similar to hospitals, nursing home patients have little to no privacy and quite often share rooms.
• Nursing home clients are viewed as patients, not clients. They are there for the sole purpose to get well. If you or your parent is well, a nursing home would not be the ideal place. Perhaps you should investigate an assisted living facility near you.

Diversion Safes - The Chameleon in Your House
If you've read any articles about Diversion Safes, you will see that they are made to hide your valuables in plain sight.
What does that really mean?
Well, Diversion Safes are like chameleons because they blend in with their surroundings and therefore are generally unnoticeable.
Diversion Safes look like real, everyday products that you see around your house or garage everyday. They are hollowed out and usually have a screw top or bottom. Many are weighted to feel like they're full.
Because Diversion Safes look like the real McCoy they can be placed in your home or garage or anywhere that you'd like to hide your valuables or money.
Many home burglaries today are committed by people who just want something to sell to support their drug habit. They are interested in small, expensive items such as laptops, loose money, a jewelry box that is in the open or anything else that looks valuable.
So why should your Maxwell House Coffee Can Safe even get his attention? It won't, so your money stored in there is safe.
Who would suspect that the can of Ajax Cleanser which is sitting with your other cleaning products would contain your diamond bracelet that you didn't take with you on vacation?
Or how about a book on your shelf that holds something of value and importance. Even if a burglar knew about Book Diversion Safes he would never have the time to look through your entire library. Burglars want to get in and out of your house as quickly as possible they can so they grab any loose loot around.
"But I don't have any expensive jewelry or important papers" you might say "so why do I need a Diversion Safe"?
How many times have you lost your cell phone or car keys at home? What about the money you left on the kitchen table? Now you can put them in a Flower Pot Diversion Safe that has a large enough compartment even for your wallet. Leave it on the table or counter and you'll always know where you left these items.
What about an extra key to your house? Put it in a Fake Stone Safe or an Outside Thermometer Diversion Safe rather than leave it under the mat or above the door or in the mailbox - those days are gone.
Another place to hide an extra key for your house, car, boat, shed or even your swimming pool gate is in your garage. But put it in a Liquid Wrench Diversion Safe surrounded by your other car products.
Or, if you want a large container for other items, place them in a one-gallon Paint Can Diversion Safe and put it with your painting products.
One other thing - with some Diversion Safes you might want to put a little of the real product around the top to make it look used.
For example, put a little paint on the top or side of your Paint Can Diversion Safe or a touch of shaving cream on the top of your Barbasol Diversion Safe.
How many people would think to look inside an electrical wall outlet for valuables? This Diversion Safe can be put into drywall or plaster board and looks exactly like a wall outlet. Even thought this outlet is non-functioning you can still put a plug from an appliance or lamp in for even more authenticity.
Everyone should have Diversion Safes in their home and office. They are inexpensive and portable - they can be carried on vacation, placed in a college dorm room, even in a warehouse to hide keys, notes, or anything else you want to keep from your employees.
Diversion Safes make great gifts. Yes, they are unusual but they are much better than a shirt you'll never wear or a tie that should have stayed in the last century.
Diversion Safes are a gift of love. After you demonstrate how effective they are, the recipient of the Diversion Safe will realize that you put a lot of thought into the gift and that you are concerned that their valuables will now be kept safe and secure.
If you want to view over 45 different Diversion Safes that will effectively keep your valuables safe from burglars, then please visit our website: http://www.feelsafeandsecure.com/diversion_safes.html and Don't Be the Next Victim!

Finding the perfect colors for your house is a tough job. On the other hand, it can also be an exciting journey of knowing yourself and matching your personality with your home.
Many factors must be considered to come up with colors that will highlight the best features of your house. The moods and emotions that you want to reflect in certain rooms have to match with the colors you choose.
The Inside Job
Choosing interior paint colors requires you to be creative and imaginative. You have to visualize what you want for your house. This is important to be able to match the colors to your future decorating plans.
Fill your mind with bright and inspiring ideas before deciding what colors to use. Browse into different home decorating books and magazines. Take note and find samples of the colors that attracted you most.
Visualizing the future look of your house does not mean overlooking what you have at present. Choose colors to complement a favorite sofa that will probably be in the living room for a long time.
There are current features in your house that need to be studied carefully to come up with perfect color combinations. House space is a key factor to consider in choosing the right colors.
Choose light colors to make a room visually bigger. Dark colors contribute to a compressed and tight look. You can depend on colors to solve spatial problems.
Certain rooms seek to project distinct moods. Bright colors are definitely out in bedrooms. Cool and relaxing colors like blue and green are what you need to create that cozy and sleepy feeling. Warm colors such as red and orange are considered in dining or living rooms because they make rooms more inviting and energetic.
Exterior Painting
Painting the exterior of your house makes you deal with your environment. You are working not only inside the room of your house but also with neighbors' houses as well. Colors will greatly depend on your decision to blend or stand out from the crowd.
Trees in the surroundings also matter in choosing colors. Do not use dark colors on your house if you have large trees nearby. They will make your place darker.
Remember that there are also existing colors in your house. You can opt for a shade that will match with the color of your roof. You may decide to just retouch the paint of the window sills or the house outlines and maintain their existing colors.
Once you have decided what main color to use for the exterior, have an eye on the parts you want to emphasize. Accent colors are usually done on doors and windows. You can use a darker or lighter shade to accentuate these parts and add character to your house.
Your True Colors
In painting the interior and exterior of your house, you need to achieve balance and harmony. Use your creative mind. Explore and don't be afraid to experiment. Just mix, match and you'll finally get the best and true colors you really like and are perfect for your house as well.

Cleaning Granite Countertops
How do you clean granite countertops is a question more and more people are asking, as their popularity in the use of kitchen work surfaces begins to rise rapidly.
This rise of popularity is down to their pretty nature as well as their durability and ruggedness and it's their latter mentioned qualities which people tend to overly on, principally by neglecting their counter tops and generally taking them for granted.
One of the main concerns of neglect is attributed to the proper cleaning of them; people generally don't clean them often enough or they tend to use harmful products and materials on them. Here I will discuss how to clean and maintain your granite countertops so they keep that everlasting charm which you have come to enjoy.
Generally people purchase polished granite work surfaces, and the idea is that you want them to be kept in that pristine condition. Although these types of granite countertops are pretty easy to maintain a number of guidelines need to be followed. Firstly, it's essential that when you are chopping any food at all that you use a chopping board, if you fail to do so you'll end up with deep scratches on your surfaces, which after a while will need professional care and attention to rectify the problem. However, if you do forget and the damage which has been caused in minimum then there is a possibility you could rectify the problem yourself by using fine steel wool to smooth away the scratches, but make sure the steel wool is fine and not abrasive as this could increase the damage.
Leading nicely on from the above guideline is you need to ensure that hot pots, pans, dishes, plates and hot drinks shouldn't be placed directly on the countertops instead heatproof mats should be placed underneath the hot kitchenware. Generally if you fail to follow this procedure black marks may appear on the surface. Again, if this does happen then the best way to solve this situation is to use fine steel wool on the marks.
In addition to the above procedures care must be taken not to leave the remains of acidic foods such as citrus fruit, beer, wine, vinegar, fizzy drinks etc or even cleaning products which are citric acid or vinegar based on the granite countertop, as the liquid will be absorbed by the stone which can eventually lead to corrosion. You'll need to make sure that any of these liquids are wiped off using warm soapy water and a soft cloth; and any drinks containing these liquids should be used in conjunction with a coaster, in fact coasters should be used underneath any class when placed on a granite countertop, as any sliding of the vessel across the surface could scratch it.
Just to finish off on the cleaning of granite countertops it's important that you don't use any abrasive products or materials to clean the stone, use the aforementioned soft cloth and non-acidic soapy water.
The coup de grace in the maintenance of your surfaces is a little godsend known as stone penetrating sealant which should be suggested by manufacturer of your kitchen. This sealant contains special polymers and resins which penetrate deep inside the stone which forms an oil and water resistant barrier, protecting it against problems such as mold, mildew and stain causing dirt. The final beauty of this product is that it will allow your countertops to release moisture and breathe naturally. This sealant should be applied at least once a year in order to make the most of it's qualities.

Computer Housekeeping Tips
Clean Up, Speed Up My Computer
For external computer care, a can of air to blow out the keyboard and an alcohol pad to clean the keyboard and mouse are standard in my desk drawer. And NEVER use Windex or alcohol on your monitor. You will streak the optical coating and you'll regret it forever. Only use water and a soft cloth. The Internal computer care is a little more intense and takes more time and knowledge.
1. Uninstall any 3rd-party "toolbars" and "extensions" like the Yahoo and Google search bars. These keep their own internet histories.
- Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Find the program and highlight it (i.e. AOL Toolbar)
- Click "Change/Remove" or "Remove" (whichever option appears)
2. Run the Disk Cleanup utility to get rid of unnecessary files that clutter your hard drive. (I've never had a file deleted that I actually needed.)
- Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
- It will run a calculation and show you the results
- Click OK to let it delete the files.
3. Keep your My Documents file system managed just like (hopefully) your paper file system.
- Open "My Computer"
- Create files and name them by subject (Right Click > choose "New Folder")
- Click and drag the files into the new folders
- There are programs that offer "free file management", but just keeping yourself organized is the best way.
4. Download and run a Spyware Removal program. My favorite is AdAware from LavaSoft. Make sure to find the Free version download.
5. Download and run a Virus protection program. I use the Free version of AVG. It does a great job and doesn't weigh down my computer system, unlike Norton and McAfee.
6. Possibly the most important "deep cleaning" tool is a Registry Cleaner. Registries are like great big libraries and when books get out of place, error messages flash on your screen. If you ever see a.dll error, it is a registry error. Registry cleaners organize it all back into order. Finding a free one is difficult but one I have found is CCleaner. A free cleaner will never be as thorough as a purchased cleaner. They usually run around $30.
Here are a couple 'for purchase' cleaners that get good reviews:
UniBlue Registry Booster
RegistryEasy.com
7. There are also programs that will offer to "delete internet history free", but why download yet another program to do something easily yourself? Because of the many different browsers available, I won't list them all here, but a few of the most used browsers are:
Firefox - The best way to keep your hard drive clean is to install Firefox and leave Internet Explorer behind.
1. Open the FireFox web browser.
2. On the main menu, select Tools > Options > Privacy
Click "Clear All"
Internet Explore will allow you to manually remove some of your browsing history information, but there will still be traces of browsing history which professionals could quickly locate.
1. Click Tools > Internet Options > General
2. Click "Delete Files," then "OK", Click "Delete Cookies," then "OK",
Click "Clear History" then "Yes."
America Online browser is based on Microsoft Internet Explorer. In addition to the information above, here are specific steps to clear your AOL browsing history:
1. Click "settings" from the set of buttons at the top of the AOL window.
2. Click "preferences."
3. Click "toolbar and sounds."
4. Click "clear history trail now."
Other Browsers offer similar functions; investigate their menus thoroughly.
How to Backup Computer Files
It seems like your computer is the all important tool, until you lose your files and you realize the computer is just the box that held the important stuff. You MUST backup computer files on a regular basis. And there are many methods to accomplish this. I'll list them here, you choose 1, 2, or more, and then make it a priority to put your choice into action!
1a) Manually back up your files to an external USB flash drive. These are inexpensive, they come in lots of gig sizes, and by far the best one is the SanDisk because it has an "onboard back up program" as a service to you.
At NewEgg.com, in the search box, type SanDisk USB flash drive. Find one with the approximate Gigabytes you will need, and buy it.
1b) When you put the SanDisk into your computer, notice a program that will try to open called "CruzerSync". Click it, enter a username and password, and now choose which files you want it to back up regularly.
2) Purchase an external hard drive which usually come with TONS of gigs of space. (Also at NewEgg or a local store.) This is the method I use. I paid about $150 for it 3 years ago, and it works like a charm. I plug it into my computer. The "My Computer" section sees it, and I simply click and drag "My Documents, My Pictures, My Music" to the "external hard drive". It's fast, easy, and simple. And I still have lots of room to continue adding more files.
3) Purchase an online data backup tool that will automatically securely backup your computer files every day. These usually cost approximately $50 per year. You won't even know the backup is happening and you can tell if a file is selected for backup by a handy little checkmark icon that appears beside the filename.
One of the most popular on the market is Carbonite and I highly recommend it if an online secure data backup is your method of choice.
Windows System Restore, How To
Here is a Computer Secret that I use just once in awhile - but it's a Biggy:
System Restore - the best thing Microsoft ever did for their customers. This will save you tremendous hours of heartache by re-setting whatever FREAK thing happened to your computer. I am a power user; I know what I am doing, and still I have to do a System Restore about every two months. Unexplainable things happen, this is how to fix them:
Windows XP Users:
1.click Start
2.All Programs
3.Accessories
4.System Tools
5.System Restore
6.Click Next
Window's Vista Users:
1. Just type Restore into the Start menu search box, and you'll immediately see System Restore at the top of the start menu
The dates in Bold are the most recent restore points which automatically set each time you shutdown. (Another good reason to do a system shutdown nightly.)
1.Choose a date very near to the time you discovered the problem.
2.Click Next
3.Read the screen, click Next, and trust it. It should all be fine.
If the problem still persists, choose another date slightly further back. (You can go back two months but I don't recommend that. Inch your way back a bold-date at a time until the problem is fixed.) Warning: Sometimes System Restore doesn't fix the problem. At that point, you will have to fix it by trial and error. Of all the times I've used it, it has worked 98% of the time.

A Date With Your Family

Why Gratuities (Tips) Are Your Best Travel Value
While I can't say I share Anthony Bourdain's disdain
for Rachel Ray, I wince every time I see her leave a
pittance of a tip in one of her $40 a Day shows.
Why?
Because if you are trying to get the most for your
hard earned cash when traveling, the last thing
your need is to become known as a miserly tipper!
Waiters, waitresses, bartenders, bellman... People
in the service industry of all sorts are some of the
hardest working folk out there. That said, they are
also nothing if not human.
How does that come into it?
Let's start with those in the food service industry.
Generally speaking, these individuals are allowed
a certain amount of leeway in the distribution of
complimentary drinks, desserts, appetizers and
the like. Who do you think gets those?
The 10%ers?
Or that guy that can always be counted on to show
his appreciation both verbally and monetarily each
and every time he visits?
The tipper wins every time...
Now let's consider hotel staffers.
If you travel as much as I do, or even close to as
much as you would like to, then you know that
you regularly need favors from housekeeping,
room service, concierge services, bellman and
even sometimes management.
I can honestly say that I have more than recouped
every dollar of gratuity in dry cleaning, tickets,
complimentary taxi services and a hundred other
last minute or emergency situations where these
people absolutely could not wait to be of service.
The plain truth of the matter is that when you
show people that you value and respect them
and the services that they provide you with, it
is a win-win-win situation.
Your trip is enhanced by improved service as well
as more pleasant interpersonal interaction.
Your wallet is happy when you get complimentary
food, drinks and a host of other services.
Tips show that you appreciate a job well done.
Tips back up your words of appreciation.
Tips allow you to develop relationships that
will fix problems that you simply cannot predict.
Tips are your best travel value.

Good Housekeeping - New Man's Outlook
In recent times it has come to my attention that - after a few years in the wilderness - the art of good housekeeping is making a comeback. And it seems that the "new" or "modern" man is leading the way.
In times where women are, quite rightly (in my humble opinion), being placed on an equal footing with men, the "stay at home dad" has become prevalent in communities all over the western world, and even beyond.
Now, instead of being covered in oil, they are being covered in baby puke, instead of changing tires, they are changing nappies. Men are now taking an interest in cleaning tips rather than betting tips. This sudden interest in the running of the modern home has accelerated over the last 10 years and is a far cry from the days of yore, when men would bash their women over the head with a club, and whisk them off to their caves.
Although some men will always be "men's men", and will probably never change their views about the roles within domestic life, they are (gladly) fast becoming the exception to the rule.
This change can only be a good thing, and serve to create a more rounded community to live in; with these changing of roles, a possible reduction in the divorce rate may ensue, as both, men and women gain a clearer understanding of each others psyche, well, we can always dream!
If you're a "new" man the One Pair Of Hands (OPH) is the place for you.
